So you want to visit Thailand. That’s cool. It’s a great place to travel to. Got your guidebook yet? Have you noticed all those ‘Must see’ destinations, and the ‘Hidden Gems’?

Well guess what. They aren’t so hidden any more.

You can expect that “deserted beach with powder soft white sand and turquoise blue water” to be full of fat Australians with tribal tattoos drinking buckets of watered down expensive alcohol. That “charming little village with smiling locals and cheap phad thai” is now a backpacker slum bursting with tattoo parlors and crazy Germans on scooters, oh and those locals aren’t exactly smiling because of you, though they are pretty happy to see your baht.

You really can’t blame Lonely Planet or Rough Guides for the gentrification of these places, sure they opened up a lot of destinations to the less than intrepid traveller and in doing so they’ve also helped boost the livelihood of so many locals through boosting tourism, albeit at the expense of a lcations uniqueness and character.

So what do you do – head straight to Phuket, spend some times in the sports bars paying slightly less than you would for a beer back home? Squish into the cramped Shuttle bus, herded along to the Tiger Temple? Buy some ‘Singha Beer’ t-shirts, get a shoddy suit made and be on your way? Au contraire! Quelle horreur! And all those other French sayings that mean no freaken way.

The thing is it’s quite easy to have a great unique travel experience in Thailand, you just have to know where to go. Here’s a few words on my favourite places to visit and avoid the tourist crowd.

We’ll start in the south.

Krabi region isn’t the lonely, off the tourist trail province it once was, and there’s good reason for that. It’s cheap, people are friendly and there’s plenty to do. Krabi Region boasts a beautiful National Park (cabins for rent) as well as some great islands, there’s some limestone cliff climbing (or you could do as I do and watch from below, mango shake in hand). If you’re particularly adventurous you can climb the 1,227 steps to the top of Wat Tham Sua (temple of the Tiger Cave) and there’s a great night marked right on the river.

There’s some nice beaches in the area, most of which are inaccessible by land, so you’ll need to hire a longtail boat to get there, which sort of makes it Krabi town is a cool little town to while away a few days. Check out the night market and a lot of the guesthouses are run by really chatty family’s happy to talk over a cold Singha beer. Krabi town is still one of the only places I’ve come across in Thailand where after turning down an offer of a Massage you are still wished a good day anyway.

Forget Phuket and Koh Phi Phi for that matter. Ko Lanta is where it’s at. The largest island in the Krabi region, it’s a relaxing place to while away a week or so, maybe hire a motorbike and go visit the sea gypsies or if you’re lucky enough to make friends with the kitchen staff at your guesthouse you might get invited up to the market to pick up the days groceries. The beach isn’t the nicest beach in the world, but it’s still beautiful, there’s plenty of beach bars full of cool Rasta Thai guys (more than up for a chat, especially if you’re a pretty foreign girl) and a small expat community, noticeable by the Scandinavian and German bakeries popping up in town.

Also worth mentioning is the flashpacker haven of Railay, the climber & stoner Nirvana that is Ton Sai, and the chilled out Nopparat Thara – all accessible by long tail boat from Krabi town. The best resource you could check out for Krabi is YourKrabi.com. Seema is an expat living in Krabi for years now and runs the website. Independent reviews and online booking facility for most hotels in the area, and a great guide on what to expect at each beach, island and town within the region. Seriously, best guide to the area.

Moving north we’ll bypass the tourist ghettos of Koh Samui and Pha Ngan and go straight to Koh Chang. Chang’s got about 7 good bays worth visiting, catering to all different demographics. The backpackers tend to stay at ‘Lonely Beach’, the cashed up Russians tend to hang out at ‘White Sands’, and as far as kai Bae Beach goes, well, iamkohchang.com says it best;

“If your name is Sven and you are travelling with your wife Annika and your four children aged between 4-12, then this is the beach for you”

Not exactly a rave review, I know. But Koh Chang really is the place to go for an island holiday away from the normal tourist crowds, the touts and the shoddy tailors. It’s a relaxed place where you are just as likely to make friends with a few guesthouse owners as you are talking to other backpackers and there is plenty of sites to keep you occupied and away from the beach, if you’re so inclined. Or you could spend a week floating on a tire tube drinking a Mai Tai like I did. Check out iamkohchang.com or travelfish.org (the best and most up to date resource on S.E. Asia) for more info.

OK Bangkok.

It’s a sprawling, dirty city. And I love it. Most people don’t. The majority only stay a couple of days before heading out but if you dig deeper than the general tourist sites there’s really a lot going on and more than enough to keep you happy for a week or so, if you don’t mind the constant hassle from the touts around Khao San Rd.

Further north there’s Chang Mai, Chang Rai and Pai, but there’s plenty written about those places, and hordes of travelers passing through each day. There’s a reason they are so popular so do make sure you travel through, but for a taste of an authentic Thai city, try Udon Thani. It’s sort of like any mid size city back home, but signs aren’t in English (except for Sizzler) people still give you that quizzical, suprisedlook when they see you, and prices are cheap. There’s not much to see but it’s a good taste of what provincial Thai life is like.

In the North East and just on the border of the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge is the town of Nong Khai. It’s basically old man-young wife territory with not much besides a market to interest the modern backpacker, but this sleepy border town is worth a look. There are no massage parlors, or ping pong shows. Nor tailors or alcohol buckets. There’s a few temples, restaurants on the river and happy people saying ‘Sawadee’. And that’s perfect. Obviously if you list all the interesting and yet unspoiled places, this page would go on for a while. Also, there’s so much that I’m yet to see. So how about a trade – I’ve told you mine, now you tell me yours. Share your favourite sort of secret Thai destination in the comments below, and we’ll just keep it between us. We don’t want another Phuket, do we?

A couple of weeks ago I found myself sitting on a beach in Vietnam, miffed that my year abroad was about to come to a crashing halt, and desperately trying to find one more place to visit in Asia before I would have to go back to work. I wanted somewhere a little off the touristy trail (so not Bali then) somewhere I hadn’t been before (there goes Laos), somewhere survivable on my pitiful backpackers budget (adios, Philippines) and of course somewhere I would find remotely interesting (sorry, Singapore). So that left Myanmar (Or Burma, if you are imperially inclined).

Burma is somewhere that I have wanted to travel through for a long time. Just thinking about it conjures up images of pagoda’s, smiling Burmese and some really interesting colonial architecture. It also brings to mind images of a pretty nasty junta, a coup or two, persecution of the Burmese and of course Aung San Suu Kyi. Let’s see if I can sum up the current situation in one paragraph without leaving anything big out or causing offense:

Things haven’t been rosy in Burma for a while now. During WW2 the Burmese sided with Japan for a while and drove the British out – finally declaring themselves an Independent country, though that relationship was short lived and the Burmese switched sides again and fought with the Allies. After the war Bagyoke Aung San (Suu Kyi’s father) -overwhelmingly won the elections but he (and most of his parliament) were assassinated before they could even take office. A coup in 1962 forced out the left wing army who’s take over and nationalization of all services (even retail) had crippled the country’s economy. During the coup 3000 Burmese lost their lives. In 6 weeks. The government formed the SLORC (State Law and Order Restoration Council….. 1984 anyone??), promised state elections – of which Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party NLD (National League for Democracy) were of course set to win. This made the government nervous so they put Suu Kyi under house arrest and postponed the elections. When the elections were finally held the NLD won by more than 85%, but the SLORC decided they would refuse the NLD to assume power, and they arrested most the party. Not very gracious losers.

So, there’s a pretty oppressive military regime running things in Burma at the moment. Some human rights groups have even urged people not to visit (a statement Aung San Suu Kyi has endorsed). But then there’s the other side of the argument.

If we don’t travel to Burma, the Burmese will never get the chance to tell their story nor will they hear what the conditions of your life are like. Lonely Planet says:

“Tourism remains one of the few industries to which ordinary locals have access in terms of income and communication; the vast majority of locals seem to want you here. And there are plenty of other reasons to consider visiting. Human-rights abuses are less likely to occur in areas where the international community is present; keeping the people isolated from international witnesses to internal oppression may only cement the government’s ability to rule.”

If you do decide to travel to Burma, there are precautions you can take that will go a long way in making sure your tourist dollars help those who deserve it.

Keep it in the family – stay at guesthouses and family run hostels. Avoid the bigger (and more expensive) government run hotels – you’re money isn’t going anywhere except into the Junta’s pockets.

Shop around – don’t buy everything at one shop or guesthouse. Buy purchasing the things you need at different shops you are supporting a wider portion of the community and there’s less chance that a significant amount of your money is going to an unknown government run establishment. Want some artwork? Try to buy from the artists themselves. This goes for crafts too.

Take the bus – a lot of the ferries, airlines trains and travel agencies are government run, however most buses are privately owned and operated. Sure, it’s not the comfiest way to travel, but it’s cheap, you’ll meet some locals and get to see the scenery up close, while supporting genuine local business.

Lonely Planet’s Burma guidebook “does not review any restaurants, hotels or shops known to be government run.” They also “flay any government run services (such as trains).”

I decided not to go in the end. Just as I was debating whether to go or not, Aung San Suu Kyi’s incarceration had recently been extended because the Junta felt that she broke the conditions of her house arrest. A mentally ill westerner broke into her compound, swimming across a river to reach her house (obviously completely out of her control, which just serves as another example of the Junta exercising their stranglehold over the country). I felt that if Suu Kyi doesn’t want us there for now, then perhaps I had better listen. Having said that I’m still not sure if I made the right decision.

Have you been to Burma, or are you planning on going? What are your concerns regarding the Junta – do you feel that by spending money it’s only the supporting the government, or should we be going anyway to try and support the people that need it most?

Your valued opinions are hereby sought.

Talk to several different travelers about their travel tips and you probably won’t hear the same answer twice. Everybody has their own preferences and techniques or they don’t bother planning at all. Both sides have their advantages and both have their disadvantages.

Some people enjoy planning their every moment from which hotel or hostel they’ll be staying out (including booking ahead of time) to which sights and activities they’ll enjoy. What most people find out is that things hardly go according to plan. This will probably create an internal dissonance that is stressful and threatening to the rest of your trip.

There’s also the traveler who plays everything by ear. They don’t know where they’ll be, what they’ll do, or where they’ll stay. This sort of laissez-faire attitude is probably much better for the psyche since it’s difficult to be disappointed in anything if you don’t have any plans, hopes, or desires.

Buy a guidebook

You’ll hear people against guidebooks all the time citing that they don’t want to follow the gringo trail, or simply do what Lonely Planet tells them to do. Of course, I hear all these things while staying in the same hostels that were listed in guidebooks, so go figure. The simple truth is that a guidebook offers a great resource to help plan your trip. I probably read more of the book in the weeks prior to my departure than I do while traveling and planning my days. There are just too many things that you should know beforehand. All of the things listed below should be covered in a good guidebook.

Travel time and transportation

How long does it take to get from point A to point B? How are you going to travel between two places and how much is it going to cost? You’ll be much better off if you know these things ahead of time.

I recently booked a trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina on a whim thanks to some great ticket deals. I could rattle off the things I know about Argentina but logistically, I know very little. When a friend asked what I planned on doing (about an hour after booking my ticket) I told him I’d like to see the Iguazu falls, check out Patagonia, and of course, enjoy some time in Buenos Aires. After reading my Argentina guidebook I quickly realized that all of this would be very difficult to do in nine days with the long bus rides and I’d have to purchase plane tickets to get between these places quickly. Something that’s probably not in my budget. Time to rethink my plans, hopes, and desires and decide what is most important to squeeze in.

Location and availability of hotels and hostels

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t like to book someplace to sleep beyond my first night of arrival. Although I’ve had nothing but good luck with hostels and budget hotels while traveling, I don’t want to pre-pay for someplace that might turn out to be dirty or unsafe. I do like to know where they’re located though. I usually scope out two or three places in my guidebook before arriving and have a plan of attack to figure out which one I want to stay in. You should know ahead of time the average room price and where they are generally located. If you’re visiting a larger city, make sure the neighborhood you are looking at is safe and you might consider its location relative to any sights or activities you want to enjoy. There isn’t much of a point in staying at a place that’s $2 cheaper if you have to spend an hour crossing town.

Ideas and desires for sightseeing and activities

This should be a no-brainer. What sights do you want to take in? Are there any museums, monuments, etc that you plan to see? You don’t need to map them out, but have a good idea where they are and what they cost. If you are on a semi-limited time frame, maybe think about squeezing a few of them in during a single day.

Budget

Don’t forget to plan your finances for your trip. An often heard joke is to take half the clothes you think you need and twice the cash. Nothing could be more true. You’ll almost always need more money than you think so make sure you have a backup source, especially for emergencies.

If you’re using a guidebook for planning be sure to check the publication date. If it was published two years ago you better be ready to pay more than was written.

When I went to Budapest last year I was surprised to find that prices for nearly every restaurant were double what was printed in the guidebooks. Often when places get listed in a guidebook they quickly increase their prices. This is a great reason why you should venture out and experience local places that aren’t in guidebooks.

Important phrases from local language

A great thing to know when traveling abroad is some knowledge of the local language. Not only can it help logistically, but isn’t it much more polite to greet somebody in their language? You don’t need to be fluent, but try to learn a few key phrases and remember to be polite when language differences occur.

Backup ideas

You might think you know what you want to do for a week or however long you’re planning on staying somewhere but it’s wise to have some backup plans.

What happens if you can’t afford to stay in the big city? Maybe heading out to a smaller and cheaper town. Just because it’s not the popular tourist destination doesn’t mean it’s any less interesting. After all, the most authentic cultural experiences probably aren’t found downtown or near the airport.

Flight and hotel booking sites are a dime a dozen. Let’s face it. There are many affiliate programs out there that allow these companies to start a website and search various prices for their visitors. Typically their prices aren’t better than any of the major travel booking sites (Kayak, Expedia, Travelocity, etc) and often actually charge a small fee which makes me wonder why anybody would bother with these no-name sites.

So while there are no shortage of websites to find flights or hotels, searching for hostels has been more time consuming for me than I would prefer. Most times I’ve used HostelWorld to search for hostels based on location, price, availability, and most importantly, customer reviews. Most, but not all hostels are listed on HostelWorld. Others are listed on smaller sites like Hostelz or aren’t listed at all. Sometimes these small establishments find it too expensive to pay commissions to booking sites.

Looking for something a little more mid-range like a bed & breakfast or small guesthouse/inn can also be difficult. You usually don’t find small, independently run businesses on the larger booking sites and Hostel sites aren’t the same niche. I’ve found TripAdvisor to include many B&B’s but I’ve questioned their reviews since several hotels and tour companies have specifically asked me to post positive reviews on several occasions.

For flights, I’ve been a huge fan of Kayak for a while. They search most major airline’s websites and all of the major booking companies as well. It’s a simple, clean interface and does a great job of finding the best prices.
It wasn’t until last week that I found something that piqued my interest as much for searching for hotels though. Somebody recommended I check out HotelsCombined. I wasn’t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised after running my first search for Budapest. Over 300 results were presented in a clean and easy to use interface. By default the results are sorted by popularity based upon user reviews but can be sorted by price, quality (stars), distance or even the neighborhood.

What I really like about HotelsCombined is that they don’t simply list hotels, but also B&B’s, guesthouses, and even hostels. I can’t say that there aren’t any other sites that like it, but from what I’ve been able to find, it’s very unique.

One reason I continue to check multiple sites for hostels (or whatever else I am booking) is to see the various reviews that customers leave. Sometimes you don’t have much of a selection, but in places like Budapest there are an unbelievable amount of hostels and reading reviews helps you decide on which one(s) stand out. That’s what, to me, is the best part about HotelsCombined as they also aggregate the various reviews from all the sites they search. It saves quite a bit of time if you’re like me and really like to check out reviews.

If you use HotelsCombined and decide to book a room with their service you’ll be forwarded directly to the hotel or booking agent’s website to book without any additional fees. I’ve never understood why some of the major sites felt the need to charge booking fees when they also received commissions.

Give them a look and let me know what you think. It looks to be a good service and I’ll definitely be checking out accommodations through them. It may still take a while for me to break my habit of checking five or six different sites though.

I have a little secret for finding great deals on hotels that I’ve used over the years, and the good news is that in this economy, it’s only getting better.

Many people will probably be angry with this post, including a large number of our followers on Twitter. Why? Because they’re constantly advertising deals for their own benefit through affiliate travel programs or their own business. I have nothing against them doing so, but I have to warn that just because somebody says it is a deal, doesn’t always make it a deal. I receive hundreds of messages daily about amazing prices on hotels in Hawaii or New York. Since I recently visited Maui, I looked into a few of them. I never found any of these advertisements to be less than $250 per night. I would hardly call that a deal. Maybe that hotel used to charge $1,000 per night. Even so, why am I going to pay that much for a place to sleep when I’m there to see the island, not sit around in a beautiful hotel?

So if that’s your business, I apologize in advance but let’s be honest, Have Pack, Will Travel is all about saving money and making the most of your trip, so we never really saw eye-to-eye anyway.

How to find deals on hotels

Some of the best deals are to be found at the last minute. But how last minute should you look? If you’re adventurous, the very last minute. I rarely book accommodations for my entire trip unless I know it’ll be extremely difficult to secure a bed in a hostel or a cheap room in a hotel. I like to book the first night if I am arriving in the afternoon or evening just to be sure I have somewhere to sleep, but beyond that, I play it by ear. Sure, this has backfired and created a headache or two, but I’ve never slept out in the cold and I’ve never had to pay anything unreasonable for a place to sleep.

More times than naught, I’ve landed some incredible deals on hotel rooms by walking up late in the afternoon and simply inquiring about a price. Yes, you run the risk of not finding someplace, but use your judgment on the time of year and the popularity of the city you are in.

The first time this worked out for me was in Florence, Italy back in 2004. I was traveling with three Americans I met and our train arrived late in the afternoon. We walked to a couple of hostels that ended up being completely booked. This was pretty stressful and we weren’t sure where we were going to find somewhere to sleep. Before we knew it, day became night and there were no more hostels to check. On a small budget we weren’t looking forward to finding out how much a hotel room would cost.

By 8pm we entered a small two-star hotel to inquire about the price. Right there on the wall was a sign that said without a bathroom was €50, or €60 with a bathroom. We asked anyway and didn’t act desperate for a place to stay. The desk clerk (probably the owner) knew it was late and the chances of them filling any of the open rooms was unlikely. They offered us two rooms for €25 each. That worked out to about €12 per person for a very clean and authentic Italian hotel. Not bad since in Paris & Venice each hostel dorm bed cost €25 each.

I’ve had a few experiences like this over the years, but what I have been noticing lately is that, given the economy, there are even better deals to be had. Back in February I went to Costa Rica (for the second time in one year) with two friends. It was the high season and all common sense given the area were in said that booking a room was a wise idea. We reserved a private room at a hostel in Quepos as it was considerably cheaper than the hostel and hotels in Manuel Antonio (the national park area that everybody travels to the area to visit). In the guidebook and on their individual websites, all the small hotels on the road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio advertised rates of $99 or higher. You can imagine our surprise when we were driving down the beautiful road taking in beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean when we noticed signs in front of several of the same hotels we looked at online advertising $25-50 rooms! Not only could we have saved money, but we would have had beautiful ocean views and seclusion.

Sure, playing everything by ear can be stressful if you’re limited on time or easily stressed, but the upside is pretty nice.

Olympus really is the leader in consumer waterproof digital cameras. They come out with more models than anybody else and really, they’re all pretty good. Definitely do your research and find the one that fits your needs the best, but I personally like the slightly outdated Olympus Stylus 1050SW since it is considerably cheaper than some of the newer models and still a very capable camera. They’re pocketable and work just as well in standard weather as they do underwater

Olympus PEN E-P1

I have nothing against Olympus, but I never thought I would write about their cameras twice in the same post. Then again, it wasn’t until earlier today that I learned about the Olympus PEN E-P1. This camera looks SLICK. Every camera aficionado loves classic rangefinders and the PEN is certainly stylish.

But it’s not impressive just because of its looks. The small size packed body is equipped with a micro four-thirds sensor that offers both the quality and features of a standard DSLR. It is nothing to ignore, especially for travelers. I’ve found it too difficult to travel with a DSLR camera lately and usually opt to leave it home. The Olympus PEN E-P1 just might be what photography enthusiasts need for traveling.

The PEN E-P1 starts at $749 and is available for pre-order. It’s set to ship in July.

Nikon D5000

Sure, I just finished telling you how I don’t like to travel with a DSLR anymore but that’s just me. Many still do and let’s face it, they are the ultimate in quality. If you are serious about photography, you’re either currently using, or planning to start using, a Digital SLR camera.

There are higher end cameras available, but the Nikon D5000 is a great mid-range model. Lots of features, great quality, and best of all, the first articulating LCD screen on a DSLR. This can come in very handy in many awkward shooting angles.

The Nikon D5000 is available with an 18-55mm kit lens for $799 or less (sale prices have been common lately)

VholdR ContourHD Helmet Video Camera

The ContourHD helmetcam is part of the new wave of affordable helmet cameras available for extreme sports. Of course these can be used for plenty activities like hiking or rock climbing. I’m considering one for a motorcycle trip to Peru this fall.

What sets the ContourHD apart from the rest of the pack is, if you couldn’t tell by its name, the ability to shoot in HD. It records about 8 hours of 720p H.264 encoded video to a microSD in a very compact unit. The best part? They list for only $299.

The VholdR ContourHD is currently on sale for $279 at Amazon and if you purchase before June 27th, you’ll receive a $50 gift card, bringing the price down to only $229 with free shipping. Hard to beat that!

Canon VIXIA High Definition Camcorders

Canon keeps updating their VIXIA line of HD camcorders faster than I can memorize them. They’re sold to consumers, but don’t let the sub-$600 prices and soccer mom followings fool you. These are very capable devices! If you’re pretty serious about producing travel video, these are a great start.

A standard camcorder will rarely make professional quality video right out of the box, but the VIXIA line of camcorders are darn close. Add on a decent microphone and wide-angle lens, then learn how to shoot, and you can be making 1080p HD footage that rivals most Travel Channel shows.

Canon VIXIA camcorders come in several different models with built in hard drives, flash memory, or HDV tape recording and start at $599.

Flip MinoHD Pocket HD Camcorder

The 3.3oz Flip MinoHD pocket camcorder is the ultimate in portability. If you are shooting memories, you’d be hard pressed not to justify owning one of these to slip in your pocket or bag and be able to shoot decent quality HD video wherever you are.

They are extremely easy and convenient to use, but the video quality is nowhere near as good as the above mentioned Canon camcorders. Nor should you expect it to be for less than $200. But if you want to capture memories and share them online, you can’t beat it.

The Flip MinoHD costs less than $200 and also comes in various flashy colorings as well.

Here’s a list of five great travel-related books (in no particular order) that I recommend any and all to give a read. They’re all quite different from each other and each author provides his own unique outlook on the world. They should be on every travelers bookshelf.

Babylon by Bus: Or, the true story of two friends who gave up their valuable franchise selling YANKEES SUCK T-shirts at Fenway to find meaning and adventure in Iraq,

Two young Americans ditch their Yankees Suck t-shirt business and make their way to Iraq during the first year of the American Invasion. That was all I needed to read before I purchased this book! Babylon by Bus chronicles their experience in and out of the green zone from their drug use to mask the sounds of bombs exploding to their interactions with coalition forces which result in NGO work aiming to help Iraqis.

It’s an easy read, fun, and also allows you to step inside Baghdad from an outsider’s point of view.

Do Travel Writers Go to Hell?: A Swashbuckling Tale of High Adventures, Questionable Ethics, and Professional Hedonism

Drugs, debauchery, and writing for Lonely Planet. That’s Do Travel Writers Go to Hell? in a nutshell. Thomas Kohnstamm chronicles his experience in giving up everything he had in life to go to Brazil and write for Lonely Planet. This results is more trouble than you could ever one person getting into, an impossible writing workload and the author’s conflicted feelings about guidebooks and the gringo trail.

The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World

Part travel narrative, part scientific study, NPR’s Eric Weiner aims to find the happiest countries on earth and figure out what makes the people so happy. Wealth, social equality, and beautiful weather are popular explanations yet Weiner realized they have little to do with the places that are happiest.

I previously reviewed Marco Polo Didn’t Go There but decided it needed to be included in this list as well.

This collection of Rollf Potts’ travel stories include a commentary about why and how he wrote each and every one.

A great resource for the aspiring travel writer, but also a great read for anybody who will enjoy Potts unique outlook on his experiences and encounters around the world.

Paul Theroux’s classic travel narrative of his journey along the Trans-Siberian Express is over 30 years old but still holds up remarkably well. Theroux has become one of the most respected and read authors in the world and this is the book that started it all.

Sometimes brash and unapologetic about the characters he meets, some people find him off putting but it’s his brutal honesty that gains respect from everybody else. His vivid descriptions of the people he meets and places he sees is colorful, but not overly adjectve-laiden like many lesser authors. You will definitely feel as if you are on the railway car over 30 years ago while reading this classic.

Throughout my travels I have learned a lot of things about what and what not to bring when traveling independently. If you’re the type of traveler who is constantly on the go, I think you’ll benefit from this list.

1. A good backpack:

Sure, you might have some fancy luggage in your closet but if you’re going to be traveling independently on trains, buses, or by foot, you’ll soon be sick and tired of dragging that rolling suitcase behind you.

That’s why I bought the Kelty Redwing 3100 (read my review) for as my main pack when traveling. I’ve gone through three packs before I found this one. It holds about 50 liters of gear, has great padding, and can be adjusted to fit snug and comfortably.

And as a final testimonial, I had shoulder surgery a year before using this for the first time and I never once got sore wearing this bag.

Of course, everybody’s tastes will differ. It might be a good idea to try on a few at your local outdoors store, but with this model being such a bargain, it might be worth the risk to just give it a shot and return it if it doesn’t work out. Note: good backpacks can run upwards of $300. They might have more space or pockets, but unless you’re packing snow clothes, you shouldn’t need more than 40-50 liters of space.

Best part about this pack, you can carry it on the airplane!

2. A good day pack:

Not everybody will need a second bag, but it can be useful of you will have a base location and be venturing out on hikes or day trips. It’s much easier to leave your large bag behind and load up your day pack with the things you’ll need to get you through the day.
Almost any backpack will do but I particularly like the North Face Recon pack. It holds plenty of gear and is extremely comfortable. As with the Kelty bag, this is one of the first bags I’ve had that doesn’t hurt my shoulders despite loading it up daily with a gallon of water and other junk.

You’ll probably want to have a pack that can hold a water bladder, or at the very least, pockets for water bottles. You can never have enough water with you!

3. Lonely Planet guide books:

Depending on where you’re going, you’ll likely have a choice of several guidebooks. Over the years I have found Lonely Planet to be the most accurate and helpful for the independent traveler. They tend to cover all types of restaurants and accommodations from the bottom of the barrel budget hostels to five star luxury resorts. Several times I have brought two different guidebooks with me and every time, I end up relying solely on the Lonely Planet.

4. Rough Guide books:

Ok, I wasn’t entirely truthful before. When in Morocco I found myself relying a bit more on the Rough Guide. Since Morocco is a bit difficult to navigate, I often utilized information from both books to determine the best route or activity.

On the other hand though, I’ve browsed other Rough Guides at the book store and some have not been very good. When in doubt, check the reviews on Amazon.

5. Digital Camera:

This probably goes without saying as many people don’t leave home without their camera these days. My trusty pocket camera is a Nikon S600 which has recently been replaced by the Nikon S610.
You can’t go wrong with just about any modern digital camera and the choices are endless.

I also use a professional Nikon D200 body, but often I find myself leaving it behind and relying on my smaller camera. It’s easier to carry and takes great photos. Don’t forget, most of these small cameras also record movies now. The quality may not be as good as an expensive camcorder, but they work surprisingly well.

6. iPod touch:

Can you tell that I’m a bit of a gadget freak yet? I’ve always brought an iPod along with me ever since I began traveling. You won’t find me walking around the street with headphones in my ears (I prefer the sound of the world around me), but they are great on airplanes and long train rides.

Earlier this year I learned how great my new iPod touch really was. Not only could I use it to listen to music and watch videos on, but its built in WiFi allowed me to hop on to the Internet at every hostel I’ve been at this year and keep in touch with my friends and family. Check your email, surf the web, even post to your blog. Not to mention you can use it to find the latest information on happenings wherever you may be. I’ve since upgraded to an iPhone, but it is so powerful that I don’t even bother carrying a laptop with me anymore. Not even for business trips!

7. Bpa free water bottle:

Ok, enough with the gadgets. No matter where you are, you’ll need to drink water. Depending on where you are, bottled water can often be much more expensive than you’re used to. Solution? Carry your own bottle and refill it with tap water. Just be sure the water is safe to drink where you are visiting!

These CamelBak BPA free water bottles are great. Safe to use, strong as heck, and spill proof. I carry a 1 liter bottle with me every day.

8. Hiking shoes:

You might not need shoes specific to hiking but if you’ll be doing any treading on uneven ground you’ll surely appreciate them.

They’ve evolved over the years to fit and look more like regular old sneakers and less like the mountaineer boots of yesteryear so you won’t feel dorky wearing them around the city as well.

9. Sport sandals:

These are something I wish I had in Costa Rica (and now I do). I tried to make due with my sneakers but every stream, lake, or waterfall we came to I had to sit down and take off my socks and shoes. Then try to keep them dry as I crossed the river only to put them right back on. I’ve learned my lesson.

They’ll do for mild to medium hikes and you don’t have to take them off when you want to get wet.

10. Quick drying towel:

Last but not least is a quick drying, lightweight towel. They’re thin, light, extremely absorbent, and dry quickly. Much easier to carry than a regular cotton towel, they dry so quickly that they won’t get mildew easily. Perfect for camping or showering at hostels where you generally need your own towel. Some hostels will let you use a towel, but there is often a charge. I won’t travel without one anymore.

That’s it! Throw in a few t-shirts and a couple pairs of shorts and you have my backpack, loaded and ready to see the world.

Do you have any suggestions or special items that you can’t travel without? Please share them in the comments below.

I hope you found this list useful. If so, and you plan to purchase any of these items or anything else from amazon, I will earn a small percentage of any sales made through the above links. Anything helps to keep the site up running. -Thanks!
